Effective flee product

My wonderful cat has very kindly come home with small jumping friends and we didn't notice until it was too late :(

I have used carpet powders even using it on the furniture, bottled squirty stuff and spray (all branded so NOT cheap) till it almost killed us with the fumes. I have changed all the bedding and tried everything I can think of including giving the cat a dose of flea treatment.

I thought we had cracked it but the lull lasted only a day when we were being bitten again.

Does anyone have any further advice on how to get rid of the little bugers?

They certainly are persistant little devils. Unfortunately you need to keep using the powders/sprays on a regular basis for a few months, as the fleas will almost certainly have laid eggs in inaccessible places, such as the cracks beneath skirting boards, so they may well keep coming back for a while. And remember to treat moggie on a monthly basis as well. Hope you manage to get rid of them soon. They really are horrible creatures.

I only ever use Frontline spray which is only available from the vet. You can get 'flea bombs' which you put into a room, shut it up and let them off.

+1 for flea bombs if there is a persistent infestation. Don't waste your money on the ones you can get in the supermarket though, they don't work as well and you will need to keep using them.
Remember the eggs are laid in your carpet and soft furnishings, not on the pet.... vacuum floors and sofas thoroughly, wash rugs, bedding pillows etc as hot as you can.

Both are excellent and long lasting-6 months or more. But you must hoover obseeively to be sure to remove any of the little horrors.

Brands like Johnsons or Bob martin are useless.

I didn't get on top of the problem until I treated then a week later shampooed my carpets the water was full of little bodies

if you have access to a steam cleaner, they are very, very effective. Go (especially) into chair/sofa crevises , do curtains, carpets - in fact everything a flea egg could cling to - also keep kitty treated - (am not going to recommend( or not!) any flea treatments so research for your particular area.

frontline spray is still prescription only but apparently there are now parts of the country where the fleas are resistant to fipronil and a different treatment is needed

I would use frontline on the pets but dont waste money on treatment for the home unless you get a pest controller in for the treatment.

The products I used to use was less toxic than table salt, no smell, and would generally eradicate the problem in 24 hours, however we would never re-treat the property for 14 days due to eggs hatching. smoke bombs are very good for a quick short lasting effect, however the smoke will not kill the eggs and it leaves no residue to kill the the hatchlings. so this needs to be done in combination. Get a professional in to do it, make sure the treatment is guaranteed, it will work out a lot cheaper in the long run. I used to charge £65.00 to treat a 3 bed house, I have known many many people who have spent much more on home treatments and still failed and then had to call in Pest Control.

Fleas were by far the most difficult bugs to eradicate and often needed a free re-treatment.

I have used RIP flea when i needed it and found it worked well but in every case i used it very quickly after finding we had a problem. In all three cases it was humans who had imported the fleas (twice me, once DH) and you realise VERY quickly that you have a problem.

RIP fleas stops the eggs hatching too.
