I found a newt today while playing golf and took it home to show my son. Now he is asking if we can keep it and look after it. Is this possible our should I release it back?

is it my newt
Release it, its mummy is looking for him!!!
Are you gonna call it Issac and dont let it near the drinks cabinet cause you know what they are like
I think you should release it back where you found it.
Don't call it Oliver, or Dylan, and DON'T put it behind bars - you know the reason :)
Ratter you pre-empted me.
Forgot to ask. Is his name Gringrich? If so ask for his passport.

We were calling him Neddy, but I think it's a female, so now it's Nelly.
it could be one of the protected species
How do you sex a newt? Might need to know in future.
Ask Ken Livingstone !
Seriously? All newts are protected and you may not take them from the wild. Put it back.
Ken Livingstone's were Axolotls, a non native species that are sold as pets.
A newt can look after itself and will almost certainy do a better job than you or your son.
the great crested newt is definately a protected species and getting very rare. if i were you i'd put it back where i found it.. they are lovely little animals but dont last long in captivity if not very well cared for..
Please release it. I don't imagine you have a cycled tank with a filter to keep it in [apologies if you do], if not it will soon be dead.
As has been mentioned many newts are protected species and there is a reason for this.

yes of course you should put it back - you should never have taken it in the first place. It's protected by law - please take it back today, it'll die if you don't put it back.

Yeah, okay. Poor little bugger.
Take it back now, flobadob.
Like all wild animals, they don't make good pets - if you have a garden pond (or neighbours do), then why not release it in your garden?
