What is the best time of year to plant wild poppy seeds and what type of soil should be used?

Pretty much any soil will do, though some species prefer chalky soils. The soil should be free draining. Wild poppies self-seed from august or so onwards, and the seeds can require frost to germinate, so unless the seeds have been pretreated to promote germination sow in high summer for a display next year.
