Rabbits - I dont want them!

Son is with dads for a week. They are miles away. Came out of work to a txt saying his dad had bought him not one but TWO rabbits and can he bring them home. He knows I didnt want rabbits/gerbils etc as you always need to have somebody on hand to look after them if you are away, and I would be the one to end up looking after them. Says he will keep them in his room but we also have cats and I just dont think its practical. Has rang me pleading and I said no but I feel awful.
Anybody have house rabbits??

I have a friend who has got to indoor rabbits, Although when they are small they look adorable but once they get bigger they can be a handfull in the home, There wee stinks even in a litter box, they are natural borrowers and will scratch and try to dig your carpets up, chew any electrical leads that is laying about regardles if it is plugged into mains, and chew any wood they find, skirting boards, beds, sofa. I would keep them outside personally, and if ex husband bought them he should fork out the extra £100.00 pound for a decent hutch and run.

Have rang dad back and said no. Son has had major strop lol. I said IF we decided to get a rabbit for here in the future then WE would choose it etc etc, and not just have it sprung on me.

(He probably wont even like rabbits next week!)

Rabbits make wonderful indoor or outdoor pets and get on well with cats and dogs - we kept all three!!

However I agree with your decision your ex was in the wrong to buy pets before discussing it with you.

Rabbits can be great pets but they can be pretty weird - my pal got two girl rabbits for her son. It was freaky - one of the bunnies grew testicles. :-)

my daughter has a house rabbit - he lives in a massive cage most of the time, it's about 6 feet by 3 feet and 3 feet high so it takes up a lot of space.

He is house trained and she has him out most evenings but has to remove cables!

They are a liability like most animals apart from cats.

don't do it!.........they chew through wires etc, and also rabbits should live outdoors anyway, his dad bought them, let him care for them!.............

Seems to me you are just angry that his dad bought them, if you were thinking that you would get him one but you could choose it with him. I think having them would teach him that animals need looking after. Make him do it before going out to play or even before getting his tea put on the table. I feel sorry for kids who don't have animals to look after and grow up with.

lankeela - he does have pets, he has 2 cats. Its the fact that his dad didnt ask if it was ok, if we had room etc........... not that son wants a rabbit!

What a bloody nerve his father has buying rabbits with the intention that you would house and feed them with out even consulting you about it.

It wouldn't be the rabbits I'd be stewing...
