I've discovered I have a little hedgehog who likes to come and have a drink from the bowl of water I leave in the garden for the cat.

But, I have big fences all around my garden which are mostly flush to the ground, save one part that has a gap of about 2 inches.

Can hedgehogs squeeze themselves down like mice do?

You'd be amazed at how much they can squidge themselves up.

He looks really fat, I just can't work out how else he'd get in. It's always too dark to see where he disappears off to.
They certainly clumb fences!
Perhaps he lives in your garden.

Oh, I'm so dumb. I didn't realise they could climb!

Don't think he lives in it, the garden is pretty bare. Not many places he could hide.
Don't put bread and milk out for it. It upsets their stomachs. They do like cat and dog food.

I'm not going to out any food, I already have a problem with other cats coming and helping themselves, don't want to encourage them.
Hedgehogs like chips.
Interesting this, I didn't know that hedgehogs can climb.
i had a little one in my garden the other night and he managed to squeeze through a small hole in the fence, took abit of effort but he made it:)
I regularly watch a hedgehog squeeze under my neighbour's fence which appears to go all the way to the ground. It must be a pretty tight squeeze cos you can hear all it's wee bristles scratching against the wood - but 2 seconds later it pops up on the other side and merrily carries on it's way.
you are so lucky to have a hedgehog in your garden -they are getting quite rare now so please do what you can to encourage it to keep visiting you - I'm soooooo envious. Don't feed it rubbish (sorry jomifl) and maybe visit a hedgehog advice site..... lucky, lucky you -
I agree, do all you can to encourage it, we are lucky enough to have four this year, they love meal worms and peanuts which won't encourage other cats. We also have a hedgehog house but none of them have chosen to live in it yet. We do get one fox that likes to sleep in the dog kennel (our dog never uses it) even in the daytime sometimes!
He'd like a few peanuts and a drink of water

Hhhmm, maybe ill put some peanuts out then (not sure I could stomach looking at meal worms). I'd like to keep the little fella happy.
Cat food's best for them - don't give them milk, they can't stomach it.
Hedgehogs can climb??
I am amazed that they climb, never would have believed it.
arent you lucky having one of them gorgeous little fellows in your garden x
If it is a teeny tiny hedgehog you will need to keep an eye on it. They start hibernating mid November and if they are less than 700g they are too little to hibernate. I had a couple like this but I only noticed them because they were out in the daytime (which is bad). I ended up taking them to the local vet who looked after them but you could take yours to twiggywinkles.
