My boyfriend has just brought home a lobster to eat

but i don't want to kill it. He says they give it something that makes them stay alive but not feel any pain before you kill it but I want to know if there's any way I can keep it alive and maybe put him back in the sea or something. Please help asap!! x

Just get it in the pan.

As has been said, bung the beast in the freezer.

Get your biggest pan of salted water on to boil and cook for 12 mins for a 1lb, 15mins for 1 1/2lb and when cooked bung in bowl of cold water to stop it cooking further.

When I was a teenager I once went cockling and took them all home for Dad, but before I could give them to him I'd turned on my heals and taken them all back to the sea shore!

Noble as it is to want to return it to the sea I really do doubt it would survive.

Even if it does, it is going to be close to the shore and consequently likely to be caught in a lobster pot very quickly.

Cook it using Eccles' instructions and have a chat with your BF about what is acceptable to be brought home.

thanks for all your help, it looks kind of blue/black. Don't worry if i do take it the sea i will take the bands off. It's pretty big and just makes me sad if i think about anything for too long! I'll let you know what I end up doing, if we do eat it is nicer to freeze him first?

If you freeze it first, it sends them unconscious. So when you slap them in a pan of boiling hot water they just die.

I'd react exactly like you - and I don't believe the drug thing, they can't drug something you're about to it. It's probably suffering from being out of water for too long now. Go chuck it back, do it now.

they last about a day out of the water, so unless you know it was landed this morning, putting it back is just pointless and possibly cruel - it'll die.

Which is direspectful to the lobster and a waste of good food.
