The motion of walking and running prompts the body to expel, but if most of it comes out in the first firm poo, then the rest is just unformed poo not quite ready to come out! If however it has tinges of blood or mucous it can be collitis and would indicate a visit to the vet, but if the dog is healthy in all other respects I would wait 24 hours to see if the next one is ok.
Thanks all for that reassurance. As for his food, I've been all round the houses with that one & that makes little difference to his pooing pattern. We rehomed this old dog 9mths ago & have had Vet bills for other problems so I'm relieved that the consensus is that this is 'normal for him'. I was wondering if dog's guts needed yogurty cultures like humans.
