Sites vary Liz, but I'll give you what I've managed to find.

The rarest breed seams to be the Akhal-teke horse. Originally bred by tribesmen from Turkmenia on the Russian Steppes. There are less than 2,000 worlwide.

The world's rarest small horse is the Caspian, dating back 5,000 years to Persia.

Hi!

It's the Preswalski horse. They are from Mongolia but you can't ride them as they are wild. Attempts to breed them in capitivity and released into the wild in China have been successful. There are actually a lot of rare breeds of horses. Mostly english breeds such as the Shire, Irish Draught, and Suffolk Punch, the heavy breeds. Hope this helps!

One of the smallest herds of horses in the world has to be the Pryor Mountain Mustang herd in northern Wyoming and southern Montana.  Genetically identified as descended from the original Spanish Barb horses, this herd numbers about 150 and has been known to exist for at least 200 years.  Most identifying characteristic is the black stripe down the center of the back along with tiger striping on legs.  Conformation is also unique...

In 1977 there were only 300 Przewalski Horses left in captivity worldwide. By 1998 Re-introduction programmes have led to 60 Horses re-introduced to the wild and about 1400 in captivity.
