I gave my dog a Pedigree Denstix bone Saturday and ever since he's been so poorly. It's given him diarhrea (don't ask me how to spell it) and he's really low.
Yesterday I fed him boiled chicken and rice as the vets always say you should do that if they have an upset tummy. He didn't really want to drink anything and I was worried as it was so hot yesterday and with runny tummy he would probably dehydrate himself. So I made some weak non fat gravy and poured that on his chicken and rice to give him some liquid. He seemed ok and last night when it got a smidge cooler he seemed to brighten up. This morning he's still got runny tummy and he's refusing to eat or drink now. Apart from grass, he was like a cow grazing this morning.

I am worried about him as it's so hot outside.Do any of you have any good ideas of how to get a dog to drink apart from syringing it down his throat?

Any answers are much appreciated.

Please ring the vet and ask them for advice - if your dog gets too dehydrated then he could die.  He could have a stomach bug or have part of the dentistix stuck or anything - please ring your vet.

I really hope he is ok xx

i agree this seems to have gone on for long enough ...consult your vet immediately to put your mind at ease as to do....

i have two standard poodles and ones a 15 weekold pup ,in full puppy coat , they are both not eating due to heat but drinking loads i did cool them down by buying a cheap paddling pool and filling it with tepid water they drank most of that too but cooled them right down .... the best thing is to keep them in shade as much as possible and not to exercise in full heat .... let us know how you get on hope dogs better soon x

Ha ha ha.... that's a hilarious way to remember spelling. I don't know if it'll be easier to  remember that whole phrase though.
Ask the vet for some electrolyte - it really helps de-hydrated pooches - my mum's dog had a really bad tummy and it was the only thing he would drink - he just lapped it up (a whole bowl full) and a half an hour later was as right as rain. Hope he's ok!! x
Forgot to say, you may be able to pick up some electrolyte from larger pet stores - I think it's a powder that you add to water - if you can't get to a vet or they don't have an appointment.

Thanks very much for all your help. Pooch did seem a lot brighter yesterday early evening and i had remembered some advice I once got that when dogs have an upset stomach it's good to feed them natural bio pot yogurts as the pro biotics will settle the stomach. I tried a little bit at first and he munched it down straight away so he ended up eating the whole 1/2 litre pot and even ate some bland wheat dog biscuits after that. later in the evening he picked up a lot and I'm happy to say that he's now just lethargic from the heat like the rest of us.

Tha Electrolyte sounds good though and might pop to a big pet shop and buy some just to have in stock.

Once again, thanks for your help

that is good news. The pet version is called lectade
