Are there any Scottish authors we should start reading?

(not counting Burns, who is a bit difficult to read because he uses words that are not real)

I have a feeling there's some adventure writer person, but I can't put my finger on it.

And the Just William guy ... was he Scottish.

The Just William guy was a Gal

was she Gal A Sheils emeritus?
:-)
You could try William McGonagall, who has the reputation of being one of the worst poets ever. (Just read some of it, it is dreadful).
you mean like Sir Walter Scott who wrote Rob Roy?

A woman from Lancashire ... not a man from Scotland?

Well, come on ... Richmal Crompton sounds like a Scottish man's name.
Question Author
Walter Scott ... that was it !
Shari Low is contemporary female writer jj.

Haven't read any of he novels though, but she writes a piece ini the Daily Record once a week. Humorous.
Hamish McGonagall.

Are William and Hamish McGonnagall related?
Wharton.
You’ll find several famous names here, including J M Barrie (Peter Pan), Kenneth Grahame (Wind in the Willows), and Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island).

a more modern day . ...Ian Rankin ..Rebus books all set in and around Edinburgh..reading his latest at the moment.....all very good..
val macdiarmid. i think she is scottish
Adam Smith for the politicians and economists out there....The Wealth of Nations, a very important philosophical tome.

Denise Misa - New Blood Dagger - from Glasgow - hard hitting.....
John Buchan (The 39 steps, Huntingtower etc)
Stuart Mac Bride if you like crime thrillers.Set in Aberdeen.(colourful language!)
I enjoyed the Robert Douglas books.
Alex Gray's books about a Glasgow detective are pretty good.
Is Alexander McCall a scot? He wrote the Ladies No 1 Detective Agency (one of my favourites) but he has a heroine called (I think) Isabel Dalhousie who lives in Edinburgh. Nowhere near as entertaining as Precious Mamotswe, I think
Ian Banks, but don't start with The Wasp Factory.
Bigjack, the Wasp Factory was not inly the first Banks book I read, but the first book for adults (that I didn't have to read for school) that I read and I thought it was amazing! I've recently recommended it to my teenage daughter who seems to be reading a lot of teen trash just now ;-) But to back you up - read Iain Banks JJ, he's bloody brilliant. Maybe start with Espedair Street x
