my husband insists the radio is left on for the dogs when we go out.  do they get any benefit from this or are they unaware of it?  could it start them barking?  if it is beneficial do they prefer music (what kind) or chat?  personally i am afraid of the radio catching fire.

thanks

I had a dog that used to do incredible damage when left alone in the house (he would open the wardrovbes and pull out clothers/shoes etc.) I then started leaving the radio o tuned to Radio 2 - a combination of chat ad music. It didn't cure him, but at least I couldbe out for 2-3 hours before boredom set in.
You know your dog is listening when you notice that the channel has been changed when you come back!

Of course dogs are aware of sounds coming from the radio. The only time I've seen a dog bark as a result of music was when the music had samples of dogs barking.  As far as what type of radio your dogs likes, you'll have to ask him.  Although I assume different types of music affects dog similarly to how it affects most people.  Mellow music is relaxing, fast music is more energetic.  I also think that talk radio might be good because it might make the dog feel like there humans around.

I've never heard of a radio catching on fire for no reason.

I leave the radio on or the tv  for my Parrot.
radios have fuses! When a component goes and causes a short the fuse blows- so no fire. So leave the radio on! I bet you leave your fridge and freezer plugged in and running all the time and never worry about them catching fire! I guess the dog will find the radio more interesting than the fridge anyway- that is unless he can open the door!
Yes, londondave I always left the radio on for my birds - but music not talking.
Sometimes Radio 4, sometimes XFM. Music excites him.
There shouldn't be any risk of fire unless you allow him to smoke while he's listening to the radio.
