Is it ok to give a pet dog fruit as part of his diet?

I wouldn't recommend it as it usually gives them the runs!  Odd bits are ok.  I give my dog bits of apple.  He turns his nose up at any other fruit.

My dog likes a bit of melon occasionally. He loves grapes but only if you break the skin. He's a staffy/alsation and quite fierce looking but won't even break the skin on a grape! He's rabid as far as posties go though!!

dogs can live on completely vegetarian diet so any fruit or veg that your dog would like to eat is fine, as with us humans they get a lot of vits and mins from them and it helps give them a varied diet, my dog eats any fruit or veg put in front of him he loves carrots and whole apples but they are only given as a treat a few times a week

The only fruit my dog will eat is banana - and he looks so cute with it stuck between his paws like a bone! He likes raw carrots though and he likes spring cabbage too. He'll even eat cauliflower if it's got a cheese sauce on it. I agree that it certainly won't do any harm, providing it's introduced gradually if they're not used to it, or the effects are counteracted with a bone, a raw egg or something. It can only be good for them really. In the wild, dogs supplement their diet with grass and other 'vege' elements.

 

One thing I do NOT agree with though is people who force their opinions onto their dogs and make them into vegetarians because they are not naturally vegetarians, hence their carnivore teeth. Besides, they enjoy it. Let's face it, if you tried explaining to Bruno the Boxer that the poor moo-cows will have to die in order for him to eat, do you really think he's going to care?

smee.tracey - Our two love melon as well. We cut a melon slice for each of them, hold it by the corners & watch as they nibble their way along it, leaving teeth marks on the skin - hilarious!

But then they also eat olives and spit the stones out once they are finished!!

Hi louise, my best friend's dog loves fruit especially pears and the vet confirmed that it is fine as long as it doesn't give him diarrhoea.

Thanks for all your answers.  My daughter asked because Toby is always sitting by our feet when we eat and she just wondered if she could share a little fruit with him.

Dogs are omnivores, which means they can eat anything. My bitch will not touch any fruit or vegetables. She will eat certain cooked vegetables but not much. My dog on the other hand will eat anything, including salad! My aunty used to have a dog who liked cherries and he would spit the stones out! Dont give your dog raisins or grapes though as they aren't good for them. Something to do with the fungus on the outside i think!

 Both my dogs love fruit (in moderation) in fact I can not open a cucumber without one of them knowing and of course running in from another room to get some of it.It is better than giving dog treats....

  I have been doing alot of research into this, and I have read many websites and talked to lots of vets, and grapes are not good for dogs they can cause kidney failure. It is something about the way their system tries to digest  it. But other fruits, like apples , bananas, melon, berries ect... are okay
