My cat has suddenly developed a higher pitched meow, like she has a sore throat, she tried to eat today and kept 'reaching' as if she wanted to be sick, every time she did this, she brought her front paws up to her mouth ! She has eaten a few biscuits, could there be something stuck in her throat and if so, would she have been able to eat the biscuits?

My cat did this once and it turned out he'd raided the bin for some leftover chicken and got a bone splinter lodged in his teeth and sticking in his gums. I got it out OK, although he shredded my hands in the process.

It might be worth having a look in your cat's mouth and see if you can see anything. If not, sounds like a trip to the vet would be in order. I hope she's OK
Or it could be a fur ball.

definitely sounds like something stuck in the throat or even just the roof of the mouth - can you open her mouth without getting 'shredded' ?
Sometimes, if cats eat grass (which they do... ) a blade of grass can slip down quite easily, but the very nature of that piece of grass (smooth going down, bladed when trying to get it out) means your little one may have a piece in her throat...so easy going down...cant cough up as the 'blades' prevent....take her to vet darling asap partic if blood is seen as it may be aggravating her throat which may cause further probs...good luck.
smurf, if this was my pet (obviously in distress), I wouldn't come on here, I'd be on the 'phone to the vet pronto !
go to the vet in the morning, just to be on the safe side. The biscuits might go down past an obstruction. You know what it's like if you get a hair in your mouth, it drives you crazy...
hairball? My cat used to do that until he finally managed to leave me a furry present

Thanks all, she's a tough old cat and has just eaten some of our lamb ... seems to be having trouble swallowing though, keeps putting her head forward when she swallows. I will defo take her if this keeps on, although bank holiday today so they are shut. Not noticed the 'reaching' since last posting. maybe she's just being polite and covering her mouth, it was a bit odd to watch! Yes she would shred my hand to pieces if I tried to open her mouth, best leave it to the vet ...
our cats do that with their paws though, as if they'd like to get at whatever's stuck and hoik it out.
Keep us posted please.

Well it was a blade of grass. All OK now, getting over the anaesthetic, thanks to you all, she is getting better at home x
Glad she's OK now.
That's great news. Best wishes to you & puss.
I'm glad that the problem was 'just' a blade of grass and not something more serious. I bet she will be hungry now that the annoyance has gone.

Yes I gave her some nice white fish and she couldn't get enough of it. The blade of grass was that thick coarse grass (hubby has now mowed it!) and it was four inches long! What a shock when they gave it to me. Thanks for all your help and kind wishes everyone.
Oh that's good to hear, smurfchops, thanks for posting and best wishes to puss
