They launch themselves and swing on the thread - often helped by the wind

That is a great film! I've got this giant garden spider in outside my front door, has a thread of silk about 5ft long going from the window ledge to the web which then has about another 3ft the other side to a tree, would have been a hell of a gust of wind to get him across there!! Definitely scared of spiders but they are so amazing to watch
