Direct line breeding tends to lead to gentic disorders such as hip displasia.   Some breeders think it strenghens the line to breed father to daughter but litter mates should never be breed.

wikipedia has a good article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inbreeding

When my mum was a girl she had a inbreed dog.  Unfortunately it was very unpredictable as one minute it would be as loving as anything and then it would just turn.  In the end they had to put it down as it bit my uncle (he was about 7 at the time) quite badly for no reason.   I don't think it's right that you should breed any sort of animal with liter mates etc.

Hi gingerflaps,

If a Brother & Sister (Human) had sex,it is not 100% certain that the baby would be deformed(that is an old wives tale) it depends on what genetic defects are already in the family, which would be concentrated in the child.

Is that right mystress cos thats what i always thought too but then read an interview with a girl who had escaped from a cult where increeding was rife and she said loads of babies were born with no eyes or limbs cos of the inbreeding?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but now i'm not sure whats correct!

chazza,

If this girl had just escaped from a cult, lord knows what state her mind was in,or just what she imagined to be true.Or maybe she was just trying to get revenge on the cult?

I suppose if you had (Human) Inbreeding, down to grandchild level, some defects might just occur, but again it's not 100% certain.Luckily today we are much healthier, and (we hope) we have less genetic defects to pass on to the next generation;but in the past such things might have happened.

Some of these ideas of inbreeding defects are more urban myths.
