Bathe it regularly in a solotion of cooled boiled water with plenty of salt.  It will hopefully heal well.  He is obviously lame at the moment because it hurts to walk on.

A vet will only be necessary if it becomes infected or won't stop bleeding.  At the moment I don't know what else a vet will do.  They will give you antibiotics 'in case' it gets infected and charge you lots of money for the tablets and the consultation.

I would keep him in until it is healed and then the chances of it becoming infected will be minimal.

Good luck.

solution not solotion!

It may have something stuck in there, or even be infected. either way it will probably get worse - then it will be more time/money for both you and the vet.

Take it sooner rather than later, it's not worth waiting to see what may happen.
