Do you know, I can't remember what we used to use to catch mackerel, but I remember we then used the mackerel to catch dog fish. It got scary sometimes, I can tell you: those crazy little sharky guys are wild! I don't know if we just used to kick winkels off the rocks to be honest (several kicks forwards, then a good kick backwards to dislodge them).
Anything shiny on a hook will catch mackerel. If you are on a boat the easiest method is a set of feathers, 4-6 hooks on a trace.Buy these at a tackle shop. If you're fishing off rocks a float set at 6-10ft with sandeel as bait on a light rod gives good sport.

'Feathering' is considered the best way to catch them.Tie small white  feathers ( like  chickens) to  the hooks - no more than  ten hooks  or it will end up in a tangle! Use a shiny weight ie. chrome, wait for the right conditions between May and September - that's it!
