I have a friend who shows them. Reputable breeders are breeding them with less wrinkle and skin folds than those who churn them out for the pet market. Trouble is people see them on the birthday cards and on adverts and think they look cute with all that wrinkly skin and want one like that. The breed standard call only for moderate wrinkle on forehead and cheeks. They come in different coat lengths - under half an inch long, or between half an inch and one inch, off-standing and harsh with no undercoat. Temperament should be calm, independent, very affectionate, and devoted to people. Some poorly bred dogs have problems with their eyelids which have to be tacked back so they can see. If you are thinking of getting one definitely go through a breed club to source a reputable breeder.

Minnie was always so "grateful" she had a good home after a very bad start.
Yes peis are prone to mites etc and ear problems [ clean the ears once a week] they also hate water so baths can be fun.
Think about adopting a pei there are lots looking for a new mum &dad to love, the sad thing is people want them when they are small & wrinkly but once the grow into the wrinkles as an adult they are discarded and the poor dog doesn't know what it has done wrong so sad. One year some sick person tied a blind shar pei to the gate of a rescue centre on xmas day in the snow, how could you do that ? try the web site of Roma Brooks founder of Shar pei rescue and welfare for some friendly advice, I am 75 now and too old to rescue or foster, but if I could have another dog it would definitely be a shar pei. Good luck, but remember a dog is for life.

I have googled and googled and googled all the information I was looking for.. spoke to people whom own a shar pei.. we were looking at one we were going to see one after posting.
We have adopted him to our family he is 6 weeks old and absolutely adorable .. we met his mum and dad who have not had eye problems this was their second litter and this time around one of the pup's has had the eye problem.
We have registered him with a vet who checked him all over and all is well also we have taken out premium insurance .. so far he does not smell..

Kg any chance of a tinypic of your "baby", have you got used to the snoring ? they grow out of that, when we got Taz @ 12 weeks we made up a bed for him on the floor next to hubby's side of the bed, I felt sorry for him so small & away from his mum that I slept next to him on the floor for a whole week. They are very clean animals too will cry to go out in the night but wont wee indoors, Taz got stuck in the cat flap so we had to change for a bigger doggy one. Oh I wish I was you with your puppy, enjoy every minute they grow up so soon, what have you name your boy/girl pei ? has it a long brush coat or a horse hair coat ?
