Horror Story Dog Breeder
48 Answers
Bit of a long story, but some of you know I've recently got an Irish wolfhound pup from a lovely lady in Ireland and I couldn't be happier with either the dog or the breeder, however I'd had my name on her waiting list for a pup and he *** had fewer pups that people waiting so I was not down to get one initially. On that basis I put my name down on another breeders waiting list and paid a £200 deposit to show my serious intent. Meanwhile the first lady was being messed about by one of the people on her list who kept failing to turn up fro their puppy so rang me and I bought he. Lovely lady, lovely puppy- no problems at all. This left me with a deposit on another puppy from another litter, I thought okay there's no problem there I'll have that as well, so went yesterday to collect the puppy.
It was an absolute horror story of lies and nonsense from beginning to end. I had researched the people running the kennel carefully and the owner was a show judge for another breed, had done really well with them for years and nothing negative was coming up in web searches so I really didn't expect what we found.
We got there and there were dogs everywhere. I counted at least 7 different breeds and more kennels than I think I've ever seen anywhere. The poor puppy was in what was obviously a show room area, no sign of it's parents or the rest of the litter and it was small, not very well covered and very cowed, and freshly bathed, and the WRONG SEX. We immediately weren't happy as it was obvious it was a puppy farm but I did insist on seeing the parents anyway as I'd been promised and the rest of the litter.
The parents were nice enough dogs but dirty and rampaging and obviously only let out of their kennel to see us. We also couldn't go outside to judge their temperament, we were only ' allowed' to look at them through the conservatory glass, and whilst he was putting them away again I went outside for a nose about and found the rest of the litter, away from the ***, again not terribly clean and not good examples of the breed.
We challenged him about the issues with the puppy being the wrong sex and he said it was ll down to an inexperienced kennel maid! We were really fed up by this point, but felt so sorry for the pup so against our better judgement were going to take her anyway ( even though I know you shouldn't as it only encourages them to breed again) but then we asked to see he pedigree and KC reg, and were handed a pedigree with no dogs name on it only mother and father etc and no KC certs. I asked where they were and this is what he said. Lie #1 ' You never get those until you've owned the dog for 8 weeks'.
Yes you do.
Lie #2. ' It take 6 weeks to register a dog'.
No it doesn't.
Lie #3.
'Breeders never register a litter until they re all sold'
Well why did we have to have THAT puppy then if they were not all sold?
We called Bull on all of this and told him so. Then he disappeared into the kitchen, we could her raised voices and he came out with what finally might be the some of the truth.
'We haven't got the export pedigree for the mother yet so we can't register the pups yet but we will and send you the certificate.'
Yeah right.
We asked for our money back a we've been told we could have a full refund if when we saw the pup we didn't like it. We ordered an un-endorsed KC registered puppy- we were offered something with no papers and that didn't look great at what was obviously a puppy farm.
He finally agreed to a refund but 'hadn't got any cash on him' so said he would do it later via bank transfer. I'm still waiting...
I've just fired off emails to the Kennel Club, Champdogs where he advertises, his local council and other advertising websites that insist dogs are KC reg to be sold, but I am really, really angry about this and kicking myself that I ought to have gone sooner ( he made excuses he was in hospital for surgery and then couldn't be reached on the phone for ages). Awful breeder, needs closing

The scenario we were presented with was leave a deposit on the dog to secure your place in the queue for the litter as they often have time wasters and this whittles them down- I can see that, I don't mind that in fact, and I think it's reasonable. We were the supposed to go and see the pups at 5-6 weeks old- that was the agreement, choose a pup and if at that point they were not up to our expectations etc we could be refunded. That too sounded reasonable to me as much before that and you can't get a good idea of the pups, plus they will still be with the *** in their litter scenario, so you can get a good feel for all of the dogs and their breeders relationship with them. I think all of that's reasonable. However when they were a month or so old we got a call from the breeder saying that he was going into hospital for some surgery and that he would be ' in touch'. By the time we managed to get hold of him again, it was time for the pups to come home and when we visited the above scenario took place.
Our main problem was we believed him about going into hospital, which I'm not at all sure was true, otherwise we would have seen the pup and it's surroundings at 5 weeks and run a mile. I suspect but can't prove that he expected us to go there, fall in love with the puppy and meekly leave without any papers or arguing. Perhaps he does that lots of people, since he called us 'petty' and 'stupid' for wanting the KC reg the puppy was advertised with. Either way, either my money comes back by close of business on Monday or he gets taken to court and that will involve costs and expenses for viewing plus I will cause him a world of pain online. Until more people expose him online and complain to the relevant authorities, clubs and sites, this will continue happening. I reiterate I had no intention of buying the dog unseen, but we were misled into not being able to view at 4-6 weeks as you normally would. I personally think the whole outfit is one giant money making nightmare with little or no care for the dogs they keep or breed:(

For those who think everyone should take on a rescue instead of buying a puppy as someone who runs a breed rescue I have to say that not everyone is suitable to take on a rescue. They often have problems that new owners could not cope with, or may they they already have a dog and a puppy is the best option. Some rescue dogs cannot go where there are children or other animals, and just saying everyone should take on a rescue is unrealistic. Many people want a dog for a specific reason and although breed rescues do a great job a lot of all breed rescues are only interested in getting them out of the kennels and will let them go to what might be an unsuitable home for a dozen different reasons. I occasionally breed a litter when I want a dog to show, and I am very careful where my puppies go. Even so occasionally one might have to be rehomed due to bereavement in the family or other reason, and I would take back any dog I have bred and rehome it myself. The vast majority of dogs in rescues are bred by unscrupulous backyard breeders who will sell to anyone who comes along however unsuitable. They are often poorly reared and socialised and can be a nightmare to rehome successfully. Just trotting out the 'don't buy a puppy rescue one' does not always work I am afraid.
Lankeelais right, we had a mongrel *** when I was little that my Dad took off some bloke in a pub when he didnt like the way it was being treated and she took a massive amount of work because she was abused, scared and consequently got in first with most things. She hated people, other dogs, bikes, postmen, cars, noises, cats, planes, wasn't house trained, tore everything up and was generally a nutty nightmare to begin with. slowly she levelled out, but it took literally years and not everyone can devote that much time and energy, it was only because we are a massive family that we could. She ended up being a lovely dog but she really was beyond hard work.

I like other peoples dogs but don't know much about how to own one. I think this is a 'thorny' subject but do you think bringing back some sort of licence would weed out people who shouldn't own a dog?
I do hope you manage to get this place closed down, kvalidir. It's a shame the RSPCA aren't as good in 'real life'as they are on TV programmes.

Not everybody wants a rescue dog, some people want specific breeds for specific reasons or maybe just preference. We have three Wolfhounds, if it wasnt Wolfhounds it would be a different breed of our choosing, we like to choose a pure breed dog so we know what we are getting with regard to looks, temperament character etc. My Good lady also likes to show dogs, you are very limited in showing mongrels.
I would also point out that pure bred dogs are in the minority when it comes to being destroyed, and most dogs that are in the kennels are most likely, bull breeds and mongrels.
Of course there are bad owners of pure bred dogs but when you pay a lot of money for a dog I think it is most likely going to be cared for better, than the man in street that pays the RSPCA £50 for a rescue.

As said above though with crossbreeds you don't know what you are getting either size, coat or temperament wise. Fine if you are experienced with dogs and willing to put the work in but many people need to know what they are getting and that the dog will fit in with their lifestyle. With the horrendous amount of 'designer' dogs being bred such as cockapoos and labradoodles new owners are finding big problems with grooming and training, and unless very well exercised some of these crosses are going to be a nightmare or too boisterous with children or maybe not good with other dogs. The breeders con the public by saying they are 'non moulting' or hypoallergenic which is rarely true, and even if non moulting they will need clipping every six weeks or so which is not cheap and many people don't bother so end up with matted dogs that are in pain when the coat pulls their skin. Those of us who are involved with a breed also wish to see our breeds continue and are very careful how we breed and where we sell our puppies. We offer lifetime advice and will take back any dog at any time if the owner cannot cope. How many puppy farmers or even rescues will do that?
