Sounds like an Allium?
Don't all annual plants need leaves for photosynthesis? Could it be a fungus?

Thanks Prudie I think that's the one, a friend in the States found it in the garden of her new house.
Your name takes me back Kirkcudbright. I lived near there for a short while as a child and went to a local school where nearly all the other children were called McConchie. Beautiful scenery. Loved it.

If it is autumn crocus please inform your friend that they are toxic to humans and animals if consumed.

Not every one knows that crocus are toxic, when you consider that certain crocus are cultivated for the sapphire.
