Lawn burrowers

Over the past week, I have noticed that something has been digging my lawn up during the night?  Does anyone know what it could be?

No, it's not, they are paw marks in the lawn

The first time the digging started, there were remains of a bird on the lawn, but like I said, it's happening during the night.

From your description the most obvious culprit would be a fox.

 They will eat almost anything on top of the lawn like bread, scraps for birds and slugs, then start digging for yummy things like beetles and  maggots underneath - all during the night when it's usually quiet and they can go about their business undisturbed.

Is there anything I can do to stop it? It's ruining my lawn

we have just spent a long time and a lot of money landscaping our front garden, we finished it on Monday and last night something came and dug up all the gravel and ripped all the weed control fabric underneath. My neighbour said she looked out at about 1 am and there was a fox on our garden. I think it may have been looking for worms or beetles as has been suggested, I have today been out and sprinkled the whole area with vinegar as this is supposed to keep off cats, but am trying it to see if it will deter foxes. Obviously this will have to be renewed from time to time if it works.

Yes there is quite a bit that can be done. I've also found this site that gives  tons of info about foxes month by month. http://tinyurl.com/bzdfd

We had quite a problem with them a while ago and the best deterrent we found was a liquid called Reynard. A bit messy as you need to soak rags in this product and attach them to sticks around the garden - but it did the trick.

Badgers are known to dig for food

I have the same problem. My wife and I sat up one evening watching a badger do the same thing. As badgers tend not to travel to far from their set, then their home must be close by. Fortunately it is not in my garden but as we live in the centre of a busy town I should be interested to find out.
