The lifespan of the earthworm hasn't been authoritatively determined but researchers estimate that it may be up to 3 years in the wild and in captivity they have been kept alive for 10 years. Such longevity for comparatively tiny critters is no doubt explained by their healthy diet od dead leaves and other plant debris, soil bacteria and fungi, and bits of dead animals. Yum Yum.
