Do rspca workers working in the cattery / kennels / reception area have to have dbs check?

Apologies if this is not really the correct section!

Sorry, I don't know what 'dbs' is, but I have done voluntary work for the RSPCA and I didn't have any checks whatsoever. I just rang up and they told me to come along and I started more or less straight away !

Easiest way is ask them , though Chaptaz has given you first hand experience.

The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) was launched on 1st December 2014 following the implementation of the Protection of Freedoms Act. It replaced the Criminal Records Bureau and the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
Personally though, I think checks would be a good idea, it seems a bit risky to just let anyone loose on the cats and dogs, some right nutters out there !

Thanks everyone. Chaptaz how was the work? I'd love to volunteer it's something I'm considering but might be difficult with young children to work around their school holidays! Also is it possible to become employed by rspca or do vacancies rarely arise?

DBS checks can be carried out on RSPCA staff only if their duties may include putting animals to sleep:

Hi Josie, I LOVED the work. I was a dog walker and there was a lot of land around my local RSPCA and that's where the dogs were walked. They were so desperate to get out of their kennels for a run that it was a joy to do and I totally enjoyed it. I met my present dog there, he was six years old and cowering in his kennel, poor soul, so I took pity on him and brought him home! Put an end to my dog walking though sadly as I now had him to look after and walk, but I was there for about six months. I also went to see the rabbits too and took them greens and picked dandelions for them and so on. I felt sorry for the rabbits as they didn't get much attention, they were just kept clean and fed, but never got out for a run, so I enjoyed giving them some attention. I find that the RSPCA is always in need of dog walkers and you go when you have the time. Good luck ...
