I don't have cats, but my neighbours have three, and I cat-sit regularly for them.
Their tom is an outdoor cat, and he eats dry food, their queens are indoor cats and eat pouches.
Try both, and see what your cats eat - they will turn their noses up if they don't like food, and eat it if they do - a pretty good guage on if you are feeding them what they like.
I give the cat Felix pouches but I always have a few biscuits (Go Cat or Iams) in another bowl because I think eating dry food helps to prevent plaque forming on the teeth which can lead to gingivitis. Trouble is, the little devil won`t eat them but I do try.
My lot get canned food, which is topped up as needed. (i.e. I don't limit their intake. Most cats don't eat more than they need; none of mine are fat). They've also always got dried food available for them. They seem to prefer the canned stuff overall but will quite often ignore it and tuck into the dried stuff instead.
So, like Wolf63, I basically just let them have what they want (including their daily 'Dreamies' treat and occasional cans of sardines, plus whatever they can scrounge off my plate!). However it makes sense to get cats accustomed to dried food, as it means that they can be left on their own for a day or two if you need to go away.
wolf63 - "andy - I find it perplexing that your neighbour allows the boy cat to go out but not the girls. My girl cat is much fiercer than her soppy brother."
She doesn't stop the girls going out, and occasionally they do - they all have access to a cat flap. It's simply that the boy likes to go out most of the time, and the girls like to stay in, but there are no rules.
