I'm renting a holiday villa that comes with 8 hens and a cock - all black with red combs. I'm sure it's a traditional breed. Anyone know which please? Black Orpington ???

Are they big and fluffy and a bit footballish in shape with short combs? If so could be, but they are pure breeds and quite pricey.

However, there are a couple of hybrid breeds too, which are a more likely bet.
Are they full size or bantams?
Not sure I'd let these abound at a rental property, but it is possible https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minorca_chicken
can we see a pic.....

they have just had an article on our local news about a racing pigeon in distress on a rock in Devon, a young gal saving it....the owner of it, identified from the rings, in Stevenage, one Mr Eccles.
for example, Orpington?
tell you what, is it one of these, Prudie....?

Well I am in Menorca and it's a very rural property. There are also 2 Rheas and 3 great crested cranes so owner must be a bird fancier. The chickens are normal size, not bantams. Very chunky and fat. No leggings. The cock has green/black plumes. From his tail. They remind me of old prints or children's book chickens.
I added the Minorca after remembering you were on holiday ;-)

If he has an interest in birds then it is quite feasible that he is doing his bit to maintain the breed.

They're not as fancy as most of those DT and they don't have those white wattle things. I'm back at the weekend and will post a PIC, can't be faffed to try on this Hudl. Many thanks for input so far.
As Eccles has suggested, I bet they are Menorquinas......tried their eggs yet?
