Why does my cat sit on the newspaper when I am reading it, or on the paperwork when I am trying to write something? Also why do cats like to go inside boxes and large carrier bags? Thanks !

To give an example, a friend came round last night, the cat was purring and rubbing his head against our friend's chair, his arm was down by his side, over the side of the chair, and our cat suddenly pounced, bit and clawed and drew blood! How embarrassing! Oh well, thanks again !
I think it's great if you can actually 'communicate' with your cat and have them understand. As mentioned, to stare at them is taboo as it's confrontational. To show your cat that you mean no harm is easy: Look at them but to one side of their head/vision, say for example about 30cm (12 inches) and then blink slowly, keeping your eyes closed momentarily. This shows that you are not aggressive and the cat will almost always do the same thing back to you.
The other way to communicate is to mimic the 'chirruping' noise they often make when they enter a room and see you. I used to do this with my cat (now passed on) and with the blinking thing and purring at her too when we were snuggled watching telly gave me a little satisfaction that we were sometimes almost communicating in her language.
Okay.. now I sound odd.. :)
