Soiled Cat

Any ideas on cleaning a cat which has coat smelling of poo. The cat is elderly and belongs to a neighbour who has now got a dog and appears to neglect the cat now. She's frightened of water so any suggestions please.

How very kind you cp65 to care for your neighbour's neglected cat. Just when it's at an age when it needs extra care as well. Poor thing will probably also have fleas:-(. BB's suggestion looks good, I didn't know such a thing existed.

You can use dry doggie shampoo on it but if possible give a good groom first

When my beautiful mother cat was nursing her 4 kittens, the food she was on upset her stomach, resulting in her and the kittens being covered in poo. (Mum was particularly bad). I asked the vet for advice and she said the best thing was to leave it for Mum to lick it all off; she didn't like the idea of trying to wash the cats.

This cat is elderly though and needs help to clean herself. I took in a very elderly cat some years ago that was being neglected and never allowed in. He stunk and was filthy. I just filled a sink full of warm soapy water and placed his bottom half in so a lot of him was still out of the water and very gently wiped him down with a flannel. He didn't struggle and allowed me to gently clean him. The muck that came off him was heartbreaking, but watching him cleaning and licking himself after was well worth it, he must have felt so much better. That little puss broke my heart. At least 20 and thrown out by his heartless owners. I realise this may not work for you crosspatch, but would it be worth a try ?

If someone can help you by holding the cat by the scruff of its neck and with front paws wrapped in a towel, putting its bottom half in warm water might be the best way. Once most of the muck is off the cat should do the rest itself. Good luck

Cruelty to animals should always be called out. Not sure if Spath was trying to be funny or not but suggesting that treatment for a sick elderly neglected cat is not remotely funny. Neither is that being helpful to the OP. So good for Baldric for calling him out.

If you do try an wash it, use water at body temperature (feels neither hot or cool to you) It will not react so badly.

It’s not horrible, it’s washing a cat. Wet room = ideal room to wash a cat. Door would stop it running all over the house wet. I like cats, you guys just read things oddly

I can't see anything wrong with Spath's comment. When I used to go on holiday with my Mum and we had to take the cat to the cattery, the first thing we had to do was lock the catflap so stop the cat doing a runner. That's hardly abuse of an animal.

Maybe pop up to the local Cat Protection League branch waving a couple of tenners and ask them to help.

That way the terminally offenable won't have to keep wiping the froth from their screens and pussy gets clean.

I read it that you were meaning to be funny spath - I guess the perceived cruelty comes in not from locking it in a room but locking it in a wet room and turning the shower on. In general that would terrify most cats.
