It's also called a Sand Monitor. Lives in Northern Australia. Nasty little beast!
Goannas are in northern and southern Australia and certainly not nasty little beasts!

The one that invited itself to breakfast when a group of us were out in the bush north of Newcastle (NSW) was a nasty little beast. It charged, charged again, ate half a chicken, charged again and then went to sleep! According to the "animals in Australia" book I had it should have been wary of humans, but this one had obviously worked out that it's long claws, used for climbing trees, would make ideal weapons.
