I wonder if anyone can help me identify this bird. I was out at our local bird hide, all the usual species were there, blue tits, jays, robins etc. I saw a bird I have never noticed before down on ground level near my feet so got a good view. It was, I'd say, about as small as a wren, light green overall in colour but with a bright yellow stripe running from the back of its head over towards the beak. Never seen one before. Can anyone put me out of my mystery. Here's hoping and a big thank you .

I have just experienced the most stunning coincidence. I've not seen a goldcrest since last spring when they often visit a bird cherry in my garden and pick at something on the branches. My husband has just called me to the back door to look at 2 little birds in a small Xmas tree we have planted right by our deck. You're not going to believe it but was 2 of them. Has...

I'd say that was a goldcrest, one of my favourite birds and you were lucky to see one.

Thanks Prudie. That makes sense ( a crest of gold ) Yes, I felt lucky somehow. I'll google some pics to make sure but I've every confidence in your answer thanks again. I spotted it in East Lancashire, Wigan area amongst some extensive ancient woodland. Yes we do have some beautiful countryside around Wigan believe it or not, it's a well kept secret ;-) And the town its self is charming. Have a nice day!
Strange coincidence - at this time yesterday I wouldn't have had a clue but your description reminded me of an article in today's Daily Mail where they had a picture of one. Second picture dowm here:

Britain's smallest bird. Lovely that you saw one - they are very secretive. Years ago had one nesting in a fir tree in the garden.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I think it's a new visitor to this area. Another species never seen around here before but now in proliferation is the nuthatch.

What a beautiful bird!
Had one outside my bathroom window for several days a few months ago....
