Puppies?

Hiya,
Genuine advice appreciated please. I realise there may be some negative comments too....

Quite honestly, and selfishly, I have always wanted just one litter of puppies. I understand many people will say there are already too many homeless dogs... but I also don't think those are always suitable for every home.

Now, I have a very happy, healthy rescue springer, in season. The vets won't spay her due to lockdown (have asked since last June). But honestly, I am so tempted to find a dad for her.... she has tied with my *neutered" cocker around 6/7 times the last few days. My unneutered older cavalier is clueless... and my cocker bounces him away anyway.

IF... I go for it, next time- 6/8 months.... I would really appreciate proper advice and experience first. I have always had dogs, but never a baby litter.

Does anyone have any advice please?

pixie, what will you do if you can't find solid gold homes for all of them? The lady who bred our weimaraners never ever bred a litter until she wanted a dog herself and had a waiting list of people who she had personally approved for more puppies that she expected to produce. If a placement goes wrong will you take the puppy back? How will you feel if you see one of your beloved pups for sale to anybody on gumtree or preloved? What will the rescue say?

Woof, we have four homes so far, and I no doubt will keep one... (my mum suspects I will keep them all). And a couple of "possibles". I was planning to offer to buy any back, if things went wrong- but also don't want to say that until people are 100% sure they have a permanent home... so nobody just "has a go". She didn't come from an actual Rescue, but a link of people to an unwanted dog.

and health tests? Have you checked out the cost of a suitable stud?

Yes, have two possible studs. I have no paperwork for Daisy or family line, I only know she is healthy herself...

has she had the screening Lankeela suggests? Are they good studs? will they accept an unregistered untested ***?

"I only know she is healthy herself" - in that case can I bring all my dogs to you to save the cost of x rays and DNA tests? And the sixty-four dogs booked in for eye testing at our next clinic? It will save the owners a lot of money.

She hasn't had any screening, just health checks. Honestly, as you can see from one of my previous questions, she was given to me as a cocker, and general surveys plus strangers we meet out- all say springer.
Studs are all fully health-checked.
My priority would be healthy and nice-natured family dogs, rather than selling as expensive pedigree/crosses...

Can I try and put this another way - should you have come on here and asked about buying a Springer puppy, I would say make sure you only buy from a breeder who carries out all the necessary relevant health tests, otherwise you could end up with big vet bills and the possibility of having your dog put down at an early age if it is unsound or going blind. Don't take a chance with the health of the puppies - do the right thing.

Lankeela, lol. Sorry, I mean her vet checks have shown healthy heart, lungs, eyes, ears, abdomen etc- in a standard check. I am reading and taking in advice and prepared for further checks that are needed.
I'm sure the vet will let me know, but other people's experience is very welcome too.

Thanks, shoots :-). Tbf, it's probably no more sensible than having babies. Responsible for them for life loads of expense and chaos, just the same- and that didn't stop me either.

My son's pup came from a litter of 6 and they all had their photos taken when they turned 1 a couple of weeks ago. My son would like his lass to have one litter before getting her spayed. If you want pups, then go for it pixie.

Thanks, Maggie xx it's not so much I believe she should... I just can't imagine not doing it just once. Tbh, I always wanted to be a dog-breeder as a child, until my stepmum said "you can't. Too many homeless already".

They are 5/6ths of the first litter - my son took his a week earlier than the others went.
