hi, my cat has been having bouts of coughing/hiccuping (it sort of sounds like the noise you get when they are bringing up that last mouse kidney for your perusal) for a few days now she is otherwise completely normal, eating fine, happy, loving as usual. As she is well and it's been a looooong month i dont particularly want to take her to the vets. Anyone got any ideas?

Might have a hairball.
It's possibly worth getting her checked out by your vet:

Yes, possibly a hairball but a trip to the vet might be advisable
My guess would be hairball too. If puss is an outdoor cat, she may bring them up outside, so you won't see them. If the bouts are spaced out, is. Not happening all the time, I wouldnt worry, especially if she eats and seems healthy.

One of my cats regularly brings the hairballs up in the house. She rushes in especially to do it and then goes out again !
One of ours brought one up that was the size of a small mouse, gave me quite a turn!
I'd assume hairball also...and they can be rather large.

Toby was coughing the other morning. Now that the bully is gone, he's been licking and grooming for England. No sign of a hairball, so I guess they can go down...not just up.
I have often mistaken them for chewed mice too
My wee boy, Frankie, used to cough and was diagnosed with Asthma.

There are videos on YouTube which help you differentiate between different different disgusting noises that cats make and can help you work out what is wrong.
