try www.champdogs.co.uk someone there will more than likely answer your question if it is not already on the site
Sorry without wishing to appear 'elitist' champdogs is for recognisedpedigree breeds not mongrels.

Not to be rude or contradict, but puggles are not mongrels (mixed unknown ancestry) they are cross breeds!! (and btw the way that most pedigree breeds started)

Having said all that, why would you want to breed one?

Crossbreed is just a posh name for a mongrel - i.e. a dog without a pedigree, and I agree why would anyone want to breed one when both breeds have their own characteristics and you don't know which bits you will be getting?

crossbreeds do have a pedigree in that you know and record who their antecedents were and they were chosen to breed from (just like pedigree dogs)

Mongrels are dogs of mixed breeding who have just been bred any old how and their antecedents not recorded. a lot of breeds of pedigree dog started as crossbreeds, eg the Doberman, perobably the Weimaraner, where people wanted specific attributes of more than one existing breed and bred those breeds together.

so these "new" hybrid dog producers are only doing what breeders have done before.

However as lankeela so rightly says, you have to think about what characteristics you want to fix and what you are prepared to lose, what inherent weaknesses there are in your breeds and be sure that you keep temperament and function uppermost in your plans, cute is not enough!!

Sorry lankeela you are dead right. It was meant to be in the next post down about a labrador. Don't know what happened there. Didn't mean to cause a war.

You can all have a look at www.puggle.org if you want to know more about them. Meanwhile, can anyone answer my question...?

Checked out the site - ugly little b******s aren't they? No two look the same, and what happens in the next generation? I.E. do they mate puggle to puggle, or do they mate back to either a pug or a beagle? In which case they will be one quarter and three quarters. How do you know how big they will grow - could be pug size, could be beagle? Still if you can get $1000 for them, I'm not surprised they are breeding them. Bet the puppy farmers love them. No registration fees, no comeback! No recognised health tests as they are not recognised breeds. Do they whelp ok, as pugs can have problems? What about breathing problems? And eyes?

And no. I don't know of any in this country. I spend most of my time trying to help people who want to buy a puppy of my breed find a reputable breeder who does all the necessary health checks and steer clear of the puppy farmers who are only in it to make money.

Wish puppy owners had to be licensed before they could buy one instead of trying to get the dogs licensed.

OK. I wish everyone wouldn't go on as though I'm some sort of horrible puppy maimer, just because I am interested in this cross breed. Jesus, lighten up.

hi roomby,

at the moment their are only 2 breeders of puggles in the UK, in Scotland. Hardly suprising since the cost of a well bred pug is near to 1000.00 and a similar amount for a well bred beagle. That said (before you all start telling me how horrid and loathsome it all is....people make a living out of doing much worse than breeding puppies) A puggle can fetch as much as 700.00

Hi Roomby when you find a puggle breeder will you let me know as i would very much like to own one also.

I think you all need to chill out and give that person a break. I love Beagles and I love Pugs too! In fact I love any animal. Im not looking to buy a puggle although I do think they are cute and I do think people need to find out more about them before buying or considering it but there is no need to go off on one about it. And to the person who said they are ugly b*****ds - is that any way for an animal lover or breeder to be talking? I think you are all mainly annoyed as your pups will have a lesser chance of selling due to the hype and in thing of puggles. If they are proven not to have health problems etc then I dont see what the problem is, although I do think they are very over priced and you will need to watch out you dont end up buying from a puppy farm!! Good luck to you!

lovely puggle. want to breed him. contact me on 01254264564
I am a proud puggle owner who is moving from the US to the UK with him(Clark) in October. A true puggle is ONLY a cross between a purebred male pug and a purebread female beagle. There are no puggle to puggle mixes. I think everyone calling these dogs "mongrels" should lighten up and head to hampstead heath in mid-october to meet Clark. Not only is he the most well behaved, personable dog you will ever meet, he is absolutely adorable!! So you keep your inbred crazy dogs, I'll take my mutt anyday!! :-P
