If you are insuring a young dog always go for a life time policy. This means that if they are diagnosed with a recurring issue, say for example diabetes, they will be covered for it year after year, this also means you would have to stay with the same insurer as a new one would see the condition as pre-existing and would it not be covered.
I'd suggest doing a search through the Martin Lewis site :)

I had my two previous dogs insured with Pet Plan and didn't need to call on them for a number of years - until one of my dogs ruptured his cruciate ligament and the other fell ill with pancreatitis in the same month.
Pet Plan refused any payment. No amount of wrangling made any difference. I had paid them all that money for all those years, and when they were needed, they let me down.
My two young dogs (both 4 years old) are uninsured.
Instead, I put some money aside each month to cover unexpected health issues and I will face whatever comes without lining the pockets of unscrupulous insurance companies who trade on the anxieties of pet owners who love and worry about their animals.

Fruitsalad - thats when I stopped paying insurance as after 6 it was silly - jess had been in for an xrays when she was 1 but apart from that neither of them had claimed any insurance and it was getting silly.
I too put money away - 100 each month, I have only had to dip into it in the last 6 months and had more than enough to pay for an operation for Colin and Jess's recent xrays and blood tests with a large chunk left over.

yes ringlet that was my experience
and the vets said - well what did you really expect for chrissakes?
a bit like legal insurance for home insurance ( add-on) all they say is "foo! you need advice you do!"
and I said something and she said
"I said : for you need advice you do" and I very quickly got the message. If they put on an essex-accented school leaver, it is very obvious they dont give a service
