more than normal drinking

my dog is a westie and is 13 years old, she has never been ill before but has just started to drink more water than normal and has had a few mistakes more than usual. She can or will drink a whole bowl full of water in almost one go which is not normal for her. There is a diesease that is related to excessive drinking but i can't remember what it is could someone help i have booked her in for a check up but can't get in for a few days!

It dosent seen unusual to me for a dog of that incedable age to be drinking a lot, I would wait for the vet to run some propper tests and in the mean-time try not to worry..

It can be a sign of a kidney problem or even diabetes, but at her age I shouldn't worry too much. The vet will check her out and tell you what action (if any) you need to take.

i would wait for the vets advice. I dont have dogs, i have cats. But recently my eldest cat had to go to cat heaven due to kidney failure, but she didnt drink excessivly (sp?) etc so it could be anything.

Also, since its winter and we tend to have the central heating on more, it could be that she is too hot.

diabetes or kidney problems was my first thoughts to, but as kelley said central heating is very drying. i dont remember my cat drinking more, but then again cats dont drink alot anyhow (mine dont) it would probably be less noticable a cat drinking more, than a dog. but still it may be nothing, wait for the vet appointment before worrying you may be worrying about nothing.

This is to say thanks to those who posted a reply to my post about my Westie Bonnie i took her to the vet's and she was diagnosed with diabetes and is now on caninsulin daily, unfortunately she has also a liver problem which they can do nothing about!! Other than that she is fit and full of life as she is nearly 14 we have decided not to find out exactly what it is that is wrong with her liver as it will put her under great stress and mean she will be away from us for a few days ! So we making her as comfortable and her life as enjoyable as possible til she lets us know that it is time Once again thanks
