kier starmer has said that he is willing to commit british ground forces to ukraine ahead of an emergency summit in Paris. he also suggested that he was willing to accept the "responsibility that comes with potentially putting British servicemen and women in harm’s way" which would imply a combat role fighting against russia.

do you agree that british forces should be sent there?

Not before any agreement nor unilaterally.

Maybe get the UN to send troops, that'd be less risk as they will withdraw them immediately anything kicks off.

Only if Tool and the gang go with them.

Have we got any to spare?

Must have gramps. They can have much to do now NI has quietened down; and they ain't intercepting the immigrant small boat invasion, so they must be twiddling their thumbs and surfing the Net, like the rest of us.

I think, that if Trump is going to team up with Putin then Starmer needs to consider the next course of action very carefully.

No

A bit of sabre-rattling towards Moscow. Putin mustn't be allowed to think if the USA have pulled out he's got away with it.

I think covertly, there are many things going on beyond what the public is being fed.

By the way, the United States has provided over 91 billion US dollars of aid to the war effort in Ukraine, a staggering amount.

This is for a peace keeping function after some kind of agreement is made. I agree if they are part of a UN peace keeping force and all of Nato should send troops to that.

No deal can be reached with NATO on Ukraine soil.

So do I.  I don't think for a moment that Trump is teaming up with Putin but rather testing the waters.  It would be good to think that the deployment of British troops as peacekeepers or in any other role won't be necessary but with Putin who knows?

Incidentally, just an observation but Keir has a habit of emulating other leaders.  When Rishi removed his jacket and rolled up his shirtsleeves, Keir did likewise - and in Ukraine he adopted Zelensky style - a plain dark T-shirt.  A bit of psychology going on there.

I don't know naomi. i feel conflicted. i think now that the USA has given up on ukraine the cause of ukranian sovereignty is pretty much lost. especially as from the outset the USA has given away that it won't support NATO membership or territory restoration from the outset before negotiations have even begun.

is it really worth getting ourselves involved in a situation which is that hopeless or should we just focus on getting ourselves ready for the next one? i don't know what the best answer is but i lean more towards the latter.

We are and everyone else are three years to late.

Putin is yet again playing mind games and has no intention of peace, he's seen a great opportunity to play with Trump and break Nato up, it appears Putin has already achieved this.

When this stage performance is all done and dusted, Putin can claim, well I tried to secure peace but Ukraine wouldnt play ball. And while this stage show continues Putin continues to bomb the hell out of Ukraine, the latter is not a williness or show of bringing his slaughter to an end.

I forgot to say. I really hope I'm very very wrong.

the war has done a great deal of damage to russia... i think it's fairly obvious that putin did not expect victory to take 3 years. i suspect if he's allowed to keep ukraine out of NATO or the EU and even to keep the eastern territories he'll grab it with both hands.

Most emphatically NO.

No, no, no. Our troops would probably find themselves fighting somebody else's war. That just isn't fair.
