Does anyone know why the birds now sing all night instead of at dawn?

We had company staying over at the weekend & my brother-in-law said the birds kept him awake 'all night' singing too!
Setting up their terratories possibly. I haven't heard them all night but they do start at about 5 am at the mo.

You might get a small colony of blue tits or sparrows in a dense tree or hedge which twitter all night.

Living in the middle of Leicester I've noticed this too and my opinion is it has something to do with light polution and all the lights from the city as the sky (especially at the weekend) is permantly a deep, dark orange (similar to the colour of dawn) at night and perhaps the birds confuse this with dawn. I read somewhere that city song birds numbers are dwindling and wondered if the fact they are singing all the time due to the bright night skies prevents them from sleep and they are just too tired to escape predators???

I'm not sure if it's still happening, but recently I heard birds singing during the night that I hadn't noticed before. I read somewhere that robins sing by streetlight at night and Cetti, another ABer, confirmed this is the case in another post. Sounds like more than just robins are singing during the night judging by some of the answers here though!

The answer above about light pollution is the correct one I believe.
