We had to learn how to give her insulin injections each day, and also we had some strips which we had to dip into her wee once a week, there was a colour chart we had to match it too which showed us how controlled it was (sorry it was a while ago so am remembering this from memory now)
She also had to have a special diet, tinned diabetic dog food which was only available from the vets - and she was not allowed any extra treats or food as this can put them in danger.
Not sure if others will have different stories. People did say to me that she wouldn't live very long once she had that, but dont listen to them - she went on to have many happy years as a diabetic dog and passed away through old age in the end. (they also get a little dog tag to go on their colour to say they are diabetic!)
Its really not as bad as its sounds (if thats what you are concered about) its hard stopping their treats though, but its for their own good! good luck....
Hi, One thing I did forget to add looking at the other posts is, we noticed this because she was drinking far more than normal and was having little accidents around the house, which she had never done before.
As somebody has already said if your in any doubt at all please take your dog to the vet to get checked out - don't take any chances..
Demongirlie, I would agree with the previous answers, if you suspect your dog has diabetes get it checked out immediately.
Our much-loved yorkie was diagnosed as diabetic when we noticed she had been drinking lots of water and having accidents all round the house. She was kept in for a few days to reduce the ketones in her system. Unfortunately she died on the second day of her stay so don't mess around if you have any doubts.
