my stray cat gave birth last night to her first litter. She hasn't shown any interest so far in food or water? Generally, what sort of time frame should I expect see for her to start showing some interest in food before I start to worry?

If she's not even drinking that might indicate that all is not well after the birth & she should be checked over by a Vet. She really is going to need to at least drink almost immediately in order to recover properly & begin to feed the kittens.

Make sure food & water are very close to her, as some mums are reluctant to leave the kits even for a second...watch the water isn't deep enough for any of the kittens to get into it.

i agree with purple pixie i would give the vets a call and get some advise she should really have eaten something by now. shes need checking over to make sure that kittening is complete.

she would be best fed on a kitten food while shes lactating there should be a practice nurse at your local vets who should be able to go through everything you need to know.
