Hi, i have recently adopted an 18 month old labrador from a dogs home. The only problems I am having are that he tends to jump up a lot when excited. If I decide to let him off the lead then it takes me ages to get him back as he keeps running off. Also if I throw something for him he will chase it, then run away if i try to get it or growl at me. Have you got any tips on how i can teach him to retrieve properly, come back to me when i shout him and how to stop him jumping. Thanks in advance.

am a lab owner also. they are thick and daft until they are 3 years old. Almost the day it turns 3, if it is in a stable environment, you will have yourself the smartest and loyal animal around. It will listen to you and be far more well behaved. That is why guide dogs are adopted out to familys for the first years of their life and re-called when they grow a brain. (at 3y/o I promise) Until then good luck...

How much training have you given him? If the answer is none, then enrol at a dog training club and they will help you to train your dog. This cannot just be done with 'tips' you need to put in a lot of hard work.

If the answer is loads, then I would say you're not trying hard enough to explain what it is that you want him to do.
