I have a 7 month old puppy, who gets really excited when visitors come to our house. What can i do to make her calm down she won't listen to any commands when there are other people around and will bite and jump at them to get their attention and won't stop even when she has their attention. I'm trying to sell my house at the moment and i don't think prospective buyers will want my dog biting and jumping at them.

visit the site www.barkbusters.co.uk there fab they sorted my jack russell out in no time he was very aggressive, all training is done in your own home, and they dont hit or miss treat the dog in anyway, it sounds like a leadership problem, she needs to learn shes bottom of the pack not top, good luck, if they could train jack they could train any dog believe me.

You need a nice cosy crate, which is like a cave to a dog. Put her in there when people are coming and only let her out on a lead.

That's the immediate answer.

There is lots of information on crate training available, read up on it and reclaim your house & make your dog calm and happy.

when people come in if she jumps at then put her in another room to calm down then let her back in after a few mins if she carries on then keep putting her out of the room untill she gets the message. but you may have other problems starting soon so deffinatly go with barkbusters I've just contacted them myself about my dog hes going through the teenage stage at the moment and has started to ignore me on everything and our weekly basic obediance training class is not helping at all.

Little coojy could you tell me roughly how much they charge for there consultation please as my local behavourist is away untill monday and I don't have a clue how much this sort of thing costs. Thanks in advance :-)

You can do the training yourself but it does require you having someone as the guinea pig. She's still young so she should learn quick.

Basically she should learn that she only gets attention when she sits calmly. So train the sit and treat. Then ask you friend to come and have you dog as far away from the front door as poss and then ask your friend to come in. You have to have your pups attention all the time and make sure she keeps sitting. Praise her lots and lots and treat her for every good behaviour and for bad behaviour start over again.

On another note you also need to teach her that biting and jumping up is wrong. So whenever she does it stand up and turn your back to her and ignore her. And do not give her any attention until she has calmed down.

I had the same problem when out walking that my pup woudl get so excited over anyone walking past and I trained her to do the sit and focus on me and now she's not really bothered. If anyone wants to come and say hello to her I make sure she sits first so she understands good behaviour means attention and rewards. Alos means the person wanting to say hello doesn't get scratched by her jumping up.

hi claire3934 the barkbusters charege depends on what you book ie life time garentee or year garentee etc, i booked the year one which means they keep coming out till dog is trained then if problem reacurs or new problem starts whithin 1 year they will come out and sort it with you for free, i paid 199. its well worth it tho, my trainer is called jackie she's lovely, they do a indepth assessment with you where you can discuss all you want and problems you want dealing with etc, offer great advice on all dog things from behaviour to food etc and at the end of a phone if you need them between visits. would recomend this to anyone with any canine problem.
Thankyou Little coojy your a great help! It means that the cost of the training will be covered by our insureance policy. the trainer that covers my area is Called Jinny but shes away till tuesday so she will contact me then I'll let you know how we get on. :-)
My god, I am in the wrong business! For the past thirty years I have given my services FREE OF CHARGE to hundreds of dog owners every week at obedience and ringcraft training classes. No wonder there are such a proliferation of these dog behaviourists. Whatever happened to socialising and training a dog properly yourself????
Hey Happy!!
Good answer hun......our teachers would be proud!! hehehe

Hi Try reading Jan Fennel "The Dog Listener" WE use the techniquies described in that book and it works. Just stick with the methods described in there, it really did work with our Golden Retriever.

Cheers bbphotoman Brian

I use a spray on my dog it is called pet correcter, all you do is spray it in the air when they do what you dont want them to and say no at the same time. The loud hiss noise will distract them and it gives a smell that they dont like, it really does work.
