pet tortoises

I thought it was now illegal to keep tortoises as pets but there was an advert for them in my local paper today. Does anyone know the facts on this?

it isnt illegal, but before you buy one you have to have your house checked by tortoise experts, and they have to check the accommodation that the tortoise might be living in is suitable. I know this as i was thinking about getting one, but they are soooooo expensive!!

You should also check that the toroises have been bred in this country. It is illegal to import them.
