Binoculars

Can anybody recomend a small but good pair of binoculars, For a stay at home, in my own garden bird spotter.Something about �50 .[Springwatch had me hooked]

I was looking on specialist binocular sites, but they are silly money prices! Couldn't see anything for under �200 (I know, I nearly choked as well)

So I tried good ol' Ebay, and found all these,

Whilst on the subject, what do all those numbers mean like 25x25 or 30x50

You should not get binoculars, you need a spotterscope.

Have a look on ebay they are about �60.

The first figure is magnification..ie 8, 10, 12.
The second figure is field of view..ie 50, 70..

Right in the first part Toureman but the figure �50� in '30x50' indicates the diameter of the objective lens (the big lens at the end) in millimetres. For a set magnification, increasing the diameter of the objective lens has NO EFFECT on the field of view, but does increase the light gathering capabilities of the binocular.

Just a little line an old friend of mine who was a twitcher he would go anywhere at the drop of a hat to see an unusual bird (Goldie Horn was his favourite )- joke- but he said that for watching birds they make a special set 8.5x 44 but these are not so often found so 8x40 is the next best , dont be persuaded to go for a bigger magnification because you will get a narrower field of view and then it is very hard to follow a moving bird
