Possibly because of osmosis, because the slug is semi-permeable osmosis extracts the water from the slugs body and kills it. The same could happen to you if you didn't have a less permeable skin!
Osmosis: water being drawn from a weaker salt solution to a stronger, through a semi-permeable membrane. Generally a good thing, unless you're slug in a salt pot.
