Do mouse traps actually work?

I have a mouse in the house, Ive seen it many times scuttling in the kitchen when I enter. It is a pest eating food and making droppings. I bought two mouse traps with fake cheese and no luck. Even put on real cheddar on them,still no catch. Are mice are too clever for these contraptions or should I just get a cat?

Mice in the house are a pain! Mouse traps do work but you have to be patient and, as for the cheese, mice prefer chocolate for some reason.

A mouse will eat what ever food is nearest and easiest to get at, so place your trap near where ever the mouse is feeding, and you should get a result, but it will only take the trap bait when the other food is not available, so try and make sure other sources of sustinance are out of reach.

If you know where the mouse enters, or its path - that's where to place the trap (obviously), but if you don't, then just before you go to bed, dust the kitchen floor lightly with flour and in the morning you should be able to see its tracks. This might also allow you to block its entrance.

Some good tips so far ( Chocolate, Peanut butter, worth a try hehe).

I know its exact path, have seen where it goes through the gap in the counter by some pipes. The trap was placed right in the path against the wall.

I think mice are too smart for traps, get a cat

Use chocolate on the trap, mice don't particularly like cheese.

May I suggest a nice humane trap which I have used successfully on numerous occasions?
Get a tall glass (such as a pint glass) and rest a mouse sized ladder against it (I actually use a ladder from a hamster cage). Place some bait in the glass.
In the morning your mouse should be trapped in the glass. As the glass is slippy, the mouse cannot escape.
Remove mouse and return it to a safe place!
I have three cats and they are truly hopeless at catching mice! Happy catching Coffeeman 7.

I use sultanas! Never fails. Use them in a humane trap called a TripTrap - they are long square section tubes with a one-way gate in the middle.

Don't buy those little white humane traps - they're way too small and just don't work.

Cats don't necessarily work either. I think my mouse infestation was caused by my cat bringing mice in and letting them go in the house!

Ive had a lot of luck with the "humane " mouse trap. Place it where he usually runs, put a tiny piece of bacon rind or peanut butter; (bacon rind can be held on the trap by an elastic band) he has to pull hard to get it off and your sure of getting him. Check the trap regularly, when he`s in there take him down the road or a field; good walk away, or he might come back!

I have very traditional mice here, I have tried different baits as an experiment and was most successful with good strong cheddar! I also only ever had reliable success with the trip traps as mentioned! Remember to keep all food in containers that can't be chewed through. And empty your mouse at least 4 miles away (But not through other peoples letterboxes as this would be wrong!!) ;-)
