at what age is it best to begin with training a puppy to do its business on a pad ?(pup is not yet old enough to go out yet). and i had my first dog already trained and older).
and
i already had a dog when i had my new pup and was nervous about them getting on but they are fantastic together! i took peoples advice and made sure my original dog knew she was 'top dog' (greeting her/feeding her first, letting her have the puppies things if she got hold of them etc) and it has worked a treat..i was wondering how long this carries on? will they progress to being equals or will the older dog be 'top dog' for life? thank you x

I have found in the past that if you get a few drops of the puppy's urine (or a tiny smudge of it's poo) on to the pad you want it to mess on the next time, then let the pup sniff at it, the pup will usually do its future poos on the pad. I have always started with that the very first day I got my pups. When they have done it on the pad, always reward them with a cuddle so that they know they have done good! NEVER ever chastise a puppy for getting it wrong as it will frighten them. Once the puppy is a bit older, you can start training it with a clicker. For advice visit http://www.clickerzoneuk.co.uk/. I took my last pup to puppy classes (clicker training / Good Citizenship Awards) and we both had a fabulous fun time and I now have a wonderfully well behaved, happy and safe dog. Your vet will know where there are classes. As or who will be the top dog? Well, it is usually the older one, even if it may be the smaller.

K@tie visit and read the potty tips on there. Have not seen you on there in a while.
Most dogs, of the same sex will have a 1-2 relationship, under you. Opp sex have a 1 male 1 female. But dogs are a bit diff than wolves which alot of ppl compare them too. Your older dog will be top until the pup grows and wants the position, if her personality warrants her wanting the position to be next under you, you are always and should be number 1.
