Wow! I've often had 'a drink for the road' in a pub, but I don't think I could manage a whole cow ! ;-)
Do you think it could be a euphemism for abattoir?
Cetti, I think you are right, as years years ago and still in some places now, cows would have to walk down the road to the abattoir. this is when nearly all towns had there own slaughter house or a butcher would slaughter his own cows at the rear of the butcher shop, When I was at the infant school back in the dark ages I could watch the cows being slaughtered from my school canteen window, just one of those things, never bothered anybody watching, there would be an uproar these days!!
