why do snails and slugs leave a slimey path behind them?
how do they do it , and why?
does it use up any of their energy?

Slugs are snails without a shell and are related to clams and oysters since they are mollusks. The slime is mucous that is secreted by the slug or snail to enable them to move. They crawl on the ventral area of their body and it's called a foot. Their mucous is manufactured and secreted much the same as the mucous you have in your nose and other more unmentionable parts of your body. Any living organism expends energy to move or, in this case, manufacture a substance for its mobility...
