You are in exactly the same boat as me. I have a one year old and have just got a kitten.
I started by putting the kitten in its carry basket with the door shut and let the older cat approach and have a sniff. THey hissed ALOT!! After an hour i let the kitten out, there was a lot of hissing and wowling but you will get there in the end. Its a territory thing as the older cat will feel threatened byt the new kitten. Mine are both girls - are yours? I think this makes a difference. Now a month on they have a hiss now and agin but follow each other about all the time and roll about on the floor, still wowl at each othere but think they friends really!! Try swapping their beds and toys so they get used to each others scents!
Good luck!

As other answers have confirmed, this is perfectly natural our for both cats.
Cats are territorial - the incumbent cat will not apprciate an interloper, and your kitten is learning to find his way in his new pack situation.
They will both settle down together eventually. Your kitten will 'try his hand' when the mood takes him, and the pack leader, your older cat, will put him in his place, and that's how it's supposed to be.
This initial time is a bit fretful (for you - normal for them) but it doesnt last long.

i had same problem few years ago.i got a kitten and she went wild and wouldn't come near me or my other older cat.tried everything but to no avail.one night i put my coal fire on and left them having made the decision after several agonising weeks that she would be rehomed the following monday.anyway i went out to finalise the details with the new owner came back a few hours later to find both cats curled up in front of the fire quite the thing.suffice to say she stayed and she toffee by the way is a terror.she runs the house never shuts up and is generally a devil in a catsuit.would not be parted from her and you wouldn't find a more affectionate feline.so persevere it worth it in the end.
