pitbulls with gangs...
29 Answers
Did anyone else see a program on channel 4 on friday night called 'Whatever'? they did an interview with gang members in london who are saying that instead of having guns and knives everyone in gangs just have pitbull terriers. They said that they have to go to special breeders so they can get them because of the dangerous dogs act. i thought it was disgusting that gangs would use dogs to rip each other apart, and fight each others dogs. anyone else think its wrong to breed dogs purely for this reason?

The Pit Bull Terrier is the most unstable dog on the planet!!
I am not biased, just informed. I agree the only person with a pit bull is an idiot!!
The Pit Bull was banned for a reason, even the nicest quietest Pit Bull will snap and rip chunks from the first thing it wants to destroy, unfortunately this is very often children. We have all heard the owners of these dogs after the dog has attacked someone saying I don't understand what happened, he was such a loving friendly dog.
The Pit Bull was designed from scratch to fight, you will never break this dog from that trait!!

Totally agree Happy_Face. The so-called informed have never owned, and most likely never even encountered in person, a pit bull.
Yes, they were initially 'designed' for fighting. And yes, they are very able in that regard. But All of the dogs that I have owned have never harmed anyone or anything. They are loyal, protective (not aggressive!) loving family members. I would invite any of the aforementioned "informed" people making judgements based on things they've heard rather than experienced, to come to my house and meet one of these beautiful animals and I will provide the tomato relish to go with the words they will be eating.

And as an additional note to the previous, can this "informed" person tell us all what breeds of dogs are the ones that inflict the most injuries on people?
If they bothered to find out, they will be very surprised. These dogs get a bad rap because of a few idiot owners. Ratter15 and others like, should become more informed before making baseless statements.

dont get me wrong i have been afraid of dogs for most of my life, (dont laugh got bit by a jack russell puppy when i was alittle kid it must have been at least 6 inches tall lol), so aggressive dogs are not my thing however, statistically, pit bulls do not even rate in the top ten of dogs with behavioural problems! please everybody make sure your facts are correct before you go dissing any animal as this is what leads to mass hysteria when it is absolutely unwarranted. these and many other animals get an undeserved bad reputation because of this bad dog attitude. i have to agree with happy-face there many more bad owners than so called bad dogs. these gang members are just cowards i dont condone violence in any form but these type of people should be put to sleep instead of the poor dogs who only end up this way because of morons who have no respect for life either human or animal.
factually you all may find this site of interest because these are the people who end up having to deal with the poor dogs owned by bad owners:-

oh and yes they are banned in this country however, anyone who already owned a pit bull terrier and other banned dogs when the legislation came in to force in 1991 had to adhere to legislation by registering their dogs details onto a central index (the index of exempted dogs) and have their dog neutered, tattooed, and micro chipped they have to be on a lead and muzzled in a public place and owners have to have insurance against their dogs injuring third parties.
you cannot apply for your dog to go on this register only if a dog is seized and bought before the court can it be decided whether or not it can be exempted at the courts discretion and only then is it issued with an exemption certificate if it is deemed not a danger to the general public.

There are still pitbulls around because we still have idiots breeding them illegally, these ill educated fools with names like Impregnator think it so macho to have such a dog and consider it safe to keep with his children, well we know where his loyalties lie and it is certainly not with his children!! But I'm sure he has a large circle of friends that have just stopped dragging their knuckles on the ground all of which have pitbulls with large studded collars and called butch.
As a vet nurse of 26 years I can say that you cannot generalise about any breed, good or bad. You cannot say all Golden retrievers are soft, just as you cannot say all Pit Bulls are aggressive. It has to be said that the supposed 'Pit Bulls' in this country are mainly poorly bred, oversized Staffy types labelled by mislead people as 'Pit Bulls'who may well be safe with children, depending on their socialization and upbringing.Any type of cross breed in the Uk with Staffy or Pit Bull type gets a bad name becuase of true Pits which were bred purely for fighting, they have very high prey drives and high levels of aggression. How sick and how sad. So those in this country who think they have a pit bull and protest that they are safe with kids, they are only safe with kids becuase they are not Pit Bulls!!I support the outlawing of the true pit bull dog as these dogs were only bred for fighting, never to be companion or pet dogs, and you will only find the true original types of these dogs in America. What does that say about that country I wonder? However, back to the issue of the alleged 'pit bulls' in the uk,these poor cross breeds and mongrels have been stuck with a horrible label of aggressive dogs just because of their looks.A supposed pit bull from uk would bear very little comparison to an american pit bull, and the english dogs' temperament is fairly stable in right hands. Figures reporting dog bites are very unreliable as most police officers can't even recognise breeds and they record the figures.Proportionally labs and gsds inflict the most bites as they are numerically the most (over) popular dogs, and look at the state of some of those if you are talking about aggression!!So yes it is most definitely wrong to breed/use/like the image of true fighting dogs, however there are many myths surrounding fighting dogs and we mustnt lable innocent mongrels and cross breeds 'Pit Bulls' , even though some owners would want to for some obscure reason????!!
My comments are all directed at pure Pit Bulls, I know about all the crosses. I don't generalise either, I am saying that no Pit Bull is safe to have around, yes they can be placid but they are very unstable dogs as a breed.
The trouble with any bull terrier type dog is that they have the propensity to snap mentally, and the power of these dogs is immense, so buying one of these dogs as a family pet is a bit like playing Russian Roulette.
Like I said before, I been around terriers all my life, I have a been a member of various terrier associations and working terrier clubs, I have met the owners of these dogs and struggled to have a civilised conversation with them, most of them just want to tell you how hard and mean their dogs are, one was just boasting how it ripped the knee off an RSCPA inspector who just walked into the house after being invited in by the owner.
In most cases of dog attacks I put it down to the owner, but in the case of a pit bull no owner will ever own a safe pit bull!!
I promise you I am well qualified to make the comments that I make.

The "ill educated fool" here. Unlike Ratter, I truly have been around terriers all of my life. And as I said in my previous response, none of them have EVER been aggressive to any person or other animal. I simply would not allow it. If a dog is bought up properly and trained accordingly, it quite simply will not have those tendencies. This person seems to be ignoring all of the other facts that, the truly informed, are posting on here.
It is closed minded idiots like this that go around spouting off without real knowledge that empower the idiots that do mistreat and misuse these dogs.
Just so you know, not that I need to justify myself, I own Bull terriers for the reason (other than the ones mentioned in previous responses) they are short haired, barely shed are very clean so can be indoors without devastating your house.
I reiterate my offer to all people like Ratter. Come to my house and see one of these "unstable" dogs.
They are just like children, if you bring them up right, they will turn out accordingly.
I would be interested to know if you have visited any of the sites listed Ratter. Have you seen the facts and figures? What do you say about them?

I find it quite sad that we have totally come away from the original question that was initially asked here regarding the Tv programme and instead some of you are arguing between yourselves probably as you would say "like animals", I the same as anyone else have my opinion on this matter, and an opinion is something that no one can take away and that can never be proven wrong. I also believe it is the human who creates the type of dog whether it be a pit bull a bull mastiff or a poodle. A ferrari was created to manage speeds in excess of 150mph but its very rare you would see it happen. The same as a pit bull may of originally been bred to fight but in the hand of a humane person I very much doubt it would be any different to any other loved and cared for dog.
