my dog hates travelling

my dog goes nuts every time he gets in the car and has started tearing the roof lining with his teeth. The funny thing is that he can't wait to get in the car - its just that as soon as the doors are shut he goes mad for about 10 minutes then he is relatively calm and OK. How can i make him calmer when starting out?

have you tried a car crate for him. my lad sam hated travelling it was like cujo with the slevering.i persevered and now he is so confident he goes straight to the car and when in it instead of lying cowering he moves around (safely) and looks out the window. i should say i did use a crate for awhile with him but he doesn't use it now purely because of space i have 3 pooches in total and would need a truck!!!!

i agree with schumi, i'd go for crates every time. makes travelling so much easier. my setter is house crate trained too and makes life much easier for everyone including him, especially when he wants to escape from the kids - rule is if the dog is in the cage stay away.
we went to wales in the summer and he had more room than the kids - it also meant that nothing could fall on top of him and he coudnt eat the luggage!!!
